Events: ‘Amazing’ finalist from Britain’s Got Talent to star in new show visiting county venues

Things to do in Lincolshire…

A Britain’s Got Talent finalist is to star in Chantry Dance Company’s Alice – Wonderland Through the Looking Glass which will visit several county venues.

The new show sheds fresh light on some much-loved characters in a ballet written as a sequel to the famous Lewis Carroll stories; Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel Through the Looking-Glass.

Alice – Wonderland Through the Looking Glass is created by the choreographers of an Olivier Award nominated production of David Walliam’s ‘Gangsta Granny’ and the Horrible Histories stage shows.

The ballet stars Shannon Parker, who is well known for being a finalist on Britain’s Got Talent, taking on the title role as Alice.

Alice is now grown-up and an aspiring writer working in a teashop. Overworked and underpaid, life seemed much more exciting when she was a child.

The Looking Glass has remained in Wonderland as a portal to our world, and when the Red Queen accidentally crosses, she develops a plan to seize power by opening a casino where she creates an Army of Cards.

Hatter and his gang of concerned Wonderland characters pursue the Queen and find Alice. Together, they resolve to stop the Queen, but first they must try to make sense (or non-sense!) of our world.

Commenting on a YouTube video of their audition in week four, comments were left describing the perfomance as ‘amazing’ and ‘beautiful’.

Kathryn L wrote: “This, to me was one of the most beautiful and moving performances I’ve ever seen!” While TheWiggz22 admitted: “Made me cry and i’m a man!”

A M commented: “Woah you are both amazing!! so effortless and emotional. tears in my eyes and goosebumps on my skin! beautiful.”

The couple also reached the final of Sky’s Got To Dance.

Previously, Shannon was a Principal dancer with San Francisco Ballet, Northern Ballet and Ballet Du Rhin.

Chantry Dance Company’s co-artistic director, Paul Chantry, said: “As a choreographer, to work with such a brilliant dancer is a gift. Shannon is an exceptional talent, and she brings a unique dimension to the choreography through her interpretation of the work. I have no doubt she will be a great inspiration to anyone watching her performance.

“Her experience and professionalism add such a great depth to the company and she hugely inspires the other dancers as well as the creative team.”

The family show features dance, puppetry, acrobatics and more, with a new score by Tim Mountain, and also stars a company of international ballet and contemporary dancers who have danced in venues such as the Royal Opera House.

Alice – Wonderland Through the Looking Glass will visit The Guildhall Arts Centre in Grantham on Friday, September 20 and Saturday, September 21, Stamford Arts Centre on Friday, October 4, then New Theatre Royal in Lincoln on Friday, October 11 (all shows 7.30pm).

Chantry School of Contemporary and Balletic Arts in Grantham is the official school of Chantry Dance Company. Following auditions, some of the students of Chantry School have been given the chance to tour in Alice. Amongst the selected students is James Kelly from Lincoln who has performed at New Theatre Royal many times and will play naughty schoolchild, Tweedledum.

Also selected is Megan Woodfiled, who is in the ensemble, and Lauren Coyle, who has been chosen to play the other naughty schoolchild, Tweedledee. Megan and Lauren are originally from Grantham and trained locally at DancePointe before entering full-time training at Chantry School.
