News: Businesses evacuated as fire breaks out near gasworks in Lincoln

Businesses were evacuated as firefighters rushed to the scene of a blaze near a gasworks in Lincoln today.

Crews were called out to reports of a fire on Clayton Road, off Newark Road at 11:50am today, Tuesday, August 13.

Staff from firms in the surrounding area were evacuated as thick, black smoke billowed from what appeared to be the gasworks.

Cadent Gas were called out as a ‘precaution’ but say the fire was actually on a neighbouring National Grid site.

Alice Houldsworth from PP Motor Group said: “I rang the fire brigade at 11.51 and they were already on their way at 12pm. I saw multiple fire engines and there were flames and thick, black smoke that eventually turned into white smoke.”

Christopher Stokes, of Welton Motor Engineers said he saw multiple fire engines.

“We got evacuated for a short time,” he said.

“The UPS guy came running to the shop to tell us. You could see smoke and flames coming up. We didn’t know if anything could explode, although they seemed to be on top of it.”

Becky Wright, from Roundbrand was also one of the people to be evacuated.

“Someone ran past us shouting that there was a fire and told us to evacuate,” she said.

“It was really well organised and the fire brigade came very quickly.”

A spokesperson for Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue said: “All crews were called out at 11:50am. Three fire crews from across Lincoln have rushed to the blaze near the gas works, including two crews from Lincoln North and one crew from Lincoln South.

“They used two hose reels and one breathing apparatus to cool the structure. The last crew left at 13.24pm

“There has been no confirmation as to what caused the incident. Investigations are still ongoing.”
