News: Desperate appeal to help feed children during summer holidays after foodbank suffers ‘double whammy’

Storeroom shelves are almost bare at Retford Foodbank after staff say they suffered a ‘double whammy’ – with the higher costs of feeding children over the summer pushing many residents into poverty.

The organisation has put out a desperate appeal for donations to help them stop children going hungry over the summer holidays.

Paula Howard, manager of Bassetlaw Foodbank, which runs the Retford centre, said: “We are just hanging on waiting on for the harvest festival at the moment because we’ve just suffered a double whammy.

“We always see a rise in demand during the summer.

“We are only two weeks into the summers holidays, those qualifying for the higher student premium don’t get the support during this time.

“Parents are suddenly faced with rising childcare and this can push people into poverty over the holidays.

“Children are off school yet its the time of year when we don’t really get enough donations so we are just trying to to keep the shelf’s full – it is this time of year that we need donations the most.

“We’ll still feel the effects of the summer holidays until October.
