News: Fast food chain KFC launches its first vegan burger

Another Lincolnshire Highlights news story…

KFC is the next chain to jump onto the vegan trend this year, following the success of Greggs with its sausage roll launch in January.

The chicken chain has developed a Quorn burger – named ‘the Imposter’ – which KFC bosses have dubbed “a triumph of deception.”

The chicken-substitute is served in a classic bun, with lettuce and vegan mayo – plus they have managed to replicate the Original Recipe burger without an animal product in sight.

Like KFC’s other offerings, the Imposter burger is prepared in their secret recipe of 11 herbs and spices – the first time the recipe has been used on something other than chicken.

The burger is being trialled in stores from June 17 to July 15, before the company decides whether to roll it out nationally or not.

After the initial trial they will be testing out another veggie option called the ‘Souther Fritter Stacker’ which is a mixture of crispy vegetables served as a wrap or with rice.

Victoria Robertson, Chief Vegetable Enthusiast at KFC UK & Ireland, said: “We know… it’s unfair. Vegans have been cruelly denied the incredible taste of KFC up to now, which is why we’ve worked hard to perfect The Imposter – a vegan burger that the Colonel would be proud of.”

Tony Davison, Head of Global Foodservice & QSR at Quorn, said: “A vegan KFC? We couldn’t believe it either. But we’ve done it – working with KFC we’ve created a bespoke Quorn fillet that does the Colonel’s recipe justice. We have no doubt that KFC fans are going to love the modern take on a finger lickin’ favourite.”

Dawn Carr, Director of Vegan Corporate Projects at PETA, added: “We’ve been so excited to hear about this and play a part in KFC’s journey to reaching this game-changing new vegan range. We’re confident it will be a huge hit with the skyrocketing numbers of vegans, vegetarians, and flexitarians around the UK. Clucking marvellous!”
