News: Firefighters tackle 48 tonne barley blaze for more than eight hours

Firefighters battled for more than eight hours to put out nearly 50 tonnes of barley which caught fire.

The barley bales, which were in Holme Lane, Winthorpe, near Newark caught fire on Sunday afternoon, September 8.

A total of 10 firefighters from Newark and Collingham fire stations rushed to the scene, where they found 48 tonnes of barley were on fire.

The crews fought the fire well into the night, using a number of appliances in their attempts to fight the flames, including farm machinery and hoses.

A Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: “Time of call was 3.52pm on Sunday, September 8 with two appliances in attendance, from Newark and Collingham.

“Forty eight tonnes of barley bales were damaged by fire. One hose reel jet, farm machinery, drag hooks and a positive pressure fam were used to tackle the blaze.

“The incident had been dealt with the incident by 00:08am.”

He added that the cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
