News: Food Monster – is Cafe Zoot in Lincoln as good as people say?

Another Lincolnshire Highlights news story…

Located in the historic surroundings of the Bailgate, Cafe Zoot has long been a fixture of Lincoln’s culinary landscape.

The restaurant, which has been open since 2000, offers a mix of British and European cuisine for those who want to reward themselves after stumbling up Steep Hill.

Inside you’re given the option of a wide range of dishes including chicken and beef, as well as vegetarian options for those disinclined to eat meat.

Feeling particularly peckish but lacking in cash on my visit ,I decided to go for the £13.95 three course lunchtime special.

For my starter I decided to go for the Aloo Gohst Chicken Wings served with a hoisin and sweet chilli dip.

After a surprisingly short wait, I was given a plate of three chicken wings, with a side of lettuce and sliced cucumber.

The chicken itself was nice and moist which, combined with the delicious dip, made me happy with my choice.

For my main I decided to keep it nice and simple – a classic Spaghetti Bolognese should be enough to keep me tiding over until dessert.

While waiting for my main I decided to take a look at my surroundings.

The restaurant was pretty full, as one would expect on a weekend afternoon, and while a crying baby did disrupt the ambiance slightly, there’s nothing the staff could do about that.

Before I knew it my Bolognese had arrived and I was offered the customary Parmesan by one of the attentive waiters.

The Bolognese had a nice blend of herbs, the beef was cooked well and the Spaghetti had a slight al dente quality to it as it should have done.

The sauce was slightly watery, but apart from that it was a nice and simple dish done exactly the way I like it.

I had to leave some in the bowl to save myself for the final course though – perhaps I had been a bit optimistic in my appetite.

For dessert I decided to cool myself down – it was a hot day and the two warm meals had given me a bit a sweat – so I went for the ice cream.

You may think me boring for this, but I place a lot of stock in how a restaurant serves their ice cream.

Given a selection of ice creams to choose from, I decided the strawberry flavour would round off what had been a pretty good meal so far.

Very soon I was given three scoops of ice creams, covered with a strawberry sauce.

It wasn’t the most flashy of desserts but it worked – it was a solid end to a lovely meal.

I wasn’t expecting michelin star quality for the amount of money I spent, but I was still pleasantly surprised by the quality of food and service I received. I’d recommend it.
