News: FOOD MONSTER: What we thought of highly rated Chinese takeaway in Lincoln

Another Lincolnshire Highlights news story…

The Red Lantern in Lincoln has received great reviews online.

The highly rated takeaway can be found on Monks Road and offers a range of different Chinese dishes.

One reviewer said that they had “never had a bad takeaway” from the eatery while another said they would “highly recommend” it due to the great food and service.

The Red Lantern in Lincoln is quite modest looking from the outside – it only does orders to take away, so it’s simply made up of a waiting area and a kitchen.

You can choose to order while you’re there or call up and get it delivered. As it happened, I ordered on the way to the takeaway and was told that my order was only ten minutes away.

It didn’t cost much either. I went for one of their ‘set meals for one’ which, as is often the case, could have easily fed two people.

There were four different set meals options: I opted for a beef curry with fried rice plus some sweet and sour chicken balls. This only cost me £7.50 which I thought was very reasonable for the amount of food I was ordering. As if that wasn’t enough food for one person already, I also opted for the duck rolls for an extra £2.50.

After a 30 second wait, I was handed my food and was on my way. I was half expecting (due to the price) to be served quite a small portion of curry. I was very wrong.

The curry was probably my favourite dish that I ordered – it was creamy and the beef was cooked perfectly. It went very well with the fried rice, which wasn’t too sticky, as I find is often the case at various takeaways. I have to say, though, it didn’t look that appealing – but the taste was very good.

I can’t say that this dish blew me away but, for what I paid, I was pleasantly surprised. Despite the mountain of food that I ordered, I finished the curry with relative ease – I would highly recommend it.

The chicken balls were OK but I can’t say they were my favourite I’ve ever eaten. Like many others I know, sweet and sour chicken balls are a staple for me whenever I eat Chinese food. As it happened, the Red Lantern didn’t serve enough chicken in them for my liking. There was a lot of pastry and not a lot of meat. The sweet and sour sauce was very nice, though, so I would say stick to sweet and sour but maybe order another dish if you want to try them for yourselves.

I had similar complaints with the duck rolls. For anyone who may not know what these are, they are identical to spring rolls but with (yes, you guessed it) duck inside them. While they were massive (both took up almost the entire plate) there was a lot of pastry and vegetables and again not enough meat for me personally.

They were definitely worth the £2.60 I paid for the size of them alone, but I can’t say that I would recommend the duck rolls. This is especially true because, in my opinion, the starters available at a Chinese takeaway are the best part of the meal.

Overall, I have to say I enjoyed the meal. I enjoyed even more that I ordered a small feast and was only charged £10.10 for the privilege. If you’re looking for a quick, easy and reliable takeaway then look no further than Red Lantern. If you want a special meal and are willing to pay slightly more for high quality food – this may not be the best place to go and visit.
