Hundreds of tributes have been paid to a former Butlin’s chef who has died suddenly aged 48.

Glyn Ford met his long-term partner Karen Gibson at the resort in 1989.

He then moved to South Derbyshire to set up a home and raise two daughters, reports Derby Live.

Glyn is described by his family as a ‘gentle giant’ who ‘would do anything for anyone’.

He passed away on Friday, September 6 – and his death has left hundreds of fans of his club, Derby County, in mourning.

Alison Benstead, 39, Mr Ford’s sister, said: “Glyn was such a kind, gentle giant of a man who loved his family deeply and would offer his help to absolutely anyone.

“It’s been comforting to hear and read all the kind things that people have said about him since he passed away – we had no idea he’d touched so many lives and he’d be really humbled by that.

“He spent so many happy times at the football at Derby and it’s an amazing gesture by those involved with the club who’ve suggested the applause in his memory. We’re very grateful.

“Glyn had experienced some challenges in his life and as a family we are so proud of how he faced and overcame them, and then used his experiences to help others in need.

He had an eclectic taste in music and enjoyed police-related television programmes, as well as holding a particular fondness for Dovedale in the Peak District, said his family.

At the time of his death he was running a support group for those facing issues related to alcohol.

Glyn was a huge Derby County fan, watching the team for the three decades across two different grounds.

The Ram Page, a Derby County supporters’ Facebook page with more than 34,000 followers, has invited those attending the game against Cardiff tonight, Friday, September 13, to join in a round of applause to celebrate Mr Ford’s life in the 28th-minute – a reference to his 28 years of service to the club.

The details of Mr Ford’s funeral have yet to be confirmed.
