Dozens of worried residents have reported hearing a loud explosion along the coast which made them almost jump out of their skin.

Those who live in the North Somercotes area of the county reported hearing a loud bang around 12pm this afternoon, Thursday, May 16.

The bang was so loud that many people thought there had been a car accident outside their house or some of their furniture had fallen over.

Residents have taken to social media to see if they could find out what was going on.

One person said: “That was a huge bang! Scared the life out of me.”

Another added: “I’m at Skidbrooke and thought a bale stack had fallen over the animals – all went mental.”

Some people even thought that a car had crashed into their house.

One concerned resident took to Facebook to say: “I’m on South Road, South Somercotes – thought someone had crashed into the house. What the hell was it?”

Another said: “My horses went mad.”

Now the cause of the noises has been confirmed.

The bangs are related to exercises going on at Theddlethorpe Range.

This RAF facility opened in 1935 and closed in December 1973 due to its proximity to a natural gas terminal, although RAF planes still fly over the site.

The Ministry of Defence confirmed previously that it no longer owns the site at Theddlethorpe Beach.
