News: Major Skegness road set to close for a total of 13 weeks

Another Lincolnshire Highlights news story…

One of Skegness’s busiest roads is set to close for 13 weeks due to roadworks.

It comes as part of 15 weeks of roadworks that will see Castleton Boulevard re-laid, while the pavement alongside the road is replaced and enhancements are made to pedestrian crossings.

The roadworks, which begin in September, will take place in three phases and will see the road shut for six weeks before being partially reopened for two weeks and then closed for another seven weeks.

Lincolnshire County Council (LCC), which is responsible for the roadworks, says they are “absolutely necessary” as the road and pavement are coming to the end of their lifespan.

It added it has deliberately timed the works so they miss the summer season.

The first phase will see the entire road closed between Roman Bank and Park Avenue for six weeks between Monday, September 9 and Friday, October 18.

During this time there will be a signed diversion route via Grand Parade to Lumley Road to the A52 Roman Bank and vice versa.

The second phase, which begins on Saturday, October 19, will see lane closures between Roman Bank and the North Parade mini-roundabout. These will finish on Sunday, November 3.

The third and final phase will lead to a full road closure on Castleton Boulevard between Roman Bank and North Parade for seven weeks. This will lead to the original signed diversion route being reinstated.

The works are expected to finish by Friday, December 20, although this is weather permitting.

During this time the North Parade mini-roundabout will also be closed for three weeks from November 4 until Friday, November 22. This will include a 100-metre stretch of road to the north and south of the roundabout along North Parade.

This will mean a diversion via Grand Parade to Lumley road to the A52 Roman Bank to Seaview Lane and vice versa will be put in place.

Richard Davies, executive member for highways at LCC, said the works are “absolutely essential”.

“These improvements are absolutely essential, as the carriageway and footways along Castleton Boulevard have reached the end of their serviceable life and need to be replaced,” he said.

“While we’re on-site, we’ll also be installing a new uncontrolled pedestrian crossing location while improving seven others along the road – a job that will enhance safety for residents and visitors once complete.”

He added that the works are part of an “ongoing programme of improvements” to the town which aim to benefit residents and visitors.

“In addition to carrying out the works out of season when the roads are quieter, we also intend to keep disruption to a minimum for businesses and residents by maintaining access as far as reasonably practicable,” he said.

“However, we’re mindful that bad weather as we head into winter can sometimes delay the completion of roadworks, so we ask everyone to remain patient and bear with us if this happens.”
