News: Plans revealed for 150 pitch campsite at Sherwood Pines

Another Lincolnshire Highlights news story…

Plans have been announced for a new 150 pitch campsite at Sherwood Pines which is set to open by next year.

The campsite, which will be called Sherwood Pines, will be able to accommodate tents, caravans, folding campers, motorhomes and trailer tents.

It will be run by Camping in the Forest – a joint venture between Forestry England and The Camping and Caravaning Club – and is their first location in the Midlands.

Once completed, Sherwood Pines will feature a 150-pitch campsite covering 20 acres of woodland, with space for hard standings, standard grass and super service pitches.

The site is expected to stay open to campers all year round.

Director of property and development at Camping in the Forest, Nathan Goodyear, said: “Sherwood Pines has been long in the planning and we’re excited to have started work preparing the ground on site.

“Our work includes the laying of foundations for reception buildings and facility blocks, landscaping, development of hard standing areas and construction of site roads, which will be carried out sympathetically and with respect for this famous forest.”

Visitors to the campsite can spend time in the area exploring Sherwood Pines, cycling, walking, going to the nearby Go-Ape tree-top rope course and using the adventure playground and picnic areas.

Jason Maclean, recreation manager for Forestry England, said: We are really excited about this latest development of a high quality campsite coming to Sherwood Pines.

“[It is] already a hugely popular destination, both for people who visit us for the day to enjoy the walking and cycling trails, activities, Go Ape, and for people taking breaks at the Forest Holidays cabins.

“Visitors will soon be able to extend their stay for longer with the addition of this new campsite, giving them another way to enjoy the beautiful woodland and all the benefits it provides.”

It is expected that the new campsite will boost tourism to the county and also benefit its economy.

Alex Broughton, marketing and communications manager at Visit Nottinghamshire, said: “We are very enthusiastic about the plans for a Sherwood Pines campsite.

“The local area offers a wealth of visitor attractions; from the thrilling treetops adventure courses at Go Ape, to family-friendly heritage sites such as Rufford Abbey and Thoresby Park.

“As the tourist board for the region, one of our core aims is to increase the number of overnight stays – which benefits not only accommodation providers but of course has a positive knock-on effect on other tourism and hospitality businesses who are able to cater for the additional visitors.

“Whilst a day visitor spends an average of £25, this increases to around £180 per person for an overnight stay, providing a significant boost for the economy.

“This campsite in the heart of the beautiful Sherwood Forest is set to offer a wonderful and unique accommodation option – especially to those seeking a real ‘Robin Hood experience’ during their stay in Nottinghamshire – and we look forward to visiting it once open.”

The new campsite brings the total number of Camping in the Forest sites to 16 across England and Scotland, all of which are within the Forestry England Estate.

A statement from Forestry England said: “Sherwood Pines is an incredibly popular destination, both for people visiting for the day and for people taking breaks at the Forest Holidays cabins in the forest.

“The addition of a high quality campsite will help strengthen the offer to visitors, giving them another way to enjoy the beautiful woodland and all the benefits it provides.”

Bookings for the new campsite are scheduled to open in January 2020.
