A lorry has fallen into a ditch after torrential rain hit Lincolnshire, leaving a main road closed.

The HGV fell into a ditch at the side of the A18 this morning, Tuesday, June 11, forcing police to close the road while it was recovered.

The crash came on the same day that more than 40 roads across the county were closed due to flooding and incidents. Schools and hospitals were also affected by the weather.

In a post on Facebook just before 10am, officers from Louth Police posted a photo of the lorry in a deep gully at the side of the road.

They wrote: “Advance warning – A18 between the North Thoresby junction and Ludborough will be closed shortly for recovery of an HGV. Currently awaiting arrival of recovery agents.

“Local diversions will be in place. Advise using A16 as alternative. Estimated closure time of 3-4 hours. Thank you.”

The road later reopened once the HGV had been removed.

Social media users were broadly sympathetic to the lorry driver with fellow motorists blaming the condition of the road.

“This part of the road isn’t suitable for HGVs as the road isn’t wide enough and if they catch the verge there’s no return,” they wrote. “It’s bad enough if they meet a car let along another HGV.”

“Sleeping on the job,” joked one commenter. “All joking aside, glad to hear the driver’s ok.”

Another commenter claimed that poor resurfacing had meant issues with the road had not been fixed and added “It’s not the drivers fault at all!”
