News: See the breathtaking drawing of Lincoln Cathedral about to go on show in London

Another Lincolnshire Highlights news story…

A beautiful drawing of Lincoln Cathedral has been selected by the Society of Graphic Fine Art to go on display in London.

The artist, Phil Irons, actually lives in Surrey but has family in the city and is a regular visitor to Lincoln where he finds lots of inspiration for his artwork.

The drawing is called ‘Lincoln Rooftops’ and has been selected by the society for their Annual Open Exhibition at Menier Gallery in the capital.

“We are regular visitors and love Lincoln,” says Phil, who is a graphic designer by day. “It was on one of my visits that I did outline sketches and took photographs of this view of the cathedral from the castle walls so that I could draw it at home.”

“These drawings take ages to complete and Lincoln Rooftops took a long time,” adds Phil, who only received news of his success today, August 15.

“I did a few sketches on site and took photographs of the view.

“I use pencil but try not to use a ruler too much. For a drawing this complex the initial process is called graphing. You can see which parts fit into each area of the graph. And also where outlines of buildings are supposed to be.

“You remove the graph then work on 10cm sections.”

Lincoln Rooftops will be on show at Menier Gallery between October 21 and November 2.

“I’m really suprised to make it into this exhibition as the standard is really high.

“I’m really lucky to be shortlisted.

“I’m also looking to take on some more Lincoln drawings soon, perhaps Steep Hill. Or the Castle Hill Club. There’s plenty of scope.”
