News: Woman ‘knocked down by mobility scooter’ may have to cancel family holiday

Another Lincolnshire Highlights news story…

A woman may not be able to go on holiday with her children after she claims that she was knocked down by a person in a mobility scooter.

Dawn Thorpe was looking into the window of Yum Yums in Carolgate, Retford on Saturday, June 1.

The 62-year-old said that she felt a ‘whack’ on the left hand side of her body, which brought her down to the ground.

Dawn was forced to seek medical attention due to the awkward way she fell to the ground, which resulted in a bruise in her hip and a fractured wrist.

“I was so distressed and shocked at what just happened”, the mother-of-two told Lincolnshire Live.

“The pain from it was so excruciating. I couldn’t get up from the ground – I just lay there crying.”

Dawn said that she was able to get her thoughts back together when she overheard someone on a mobility scooter telling her to ‘get up’.

“I couldn’t even tell what she looked like, but I knew that this person must have been the reason why I was on the floor for half an hour”, added Dawn.

“Luckily people came to help me, but this person was nowhere to be seen. It’s left me so angry and frustrated.”

A passer-by phoned for the ambulance service to provide urgent medical assistance for the Retford mum.

A spokesperson for East Midlands Ambulance Service said: “We received a call at 12.53pm on June 1 to Carolgate in Retford. The caller reported that someone had fallen. We sent a crewed ambulance to the scene.”

But, she was then rushed to hospital by her son-in-law to get her wrist checked up on at Bassetlaw Hospital in Worksop.

Doctors put Dawn’s arm into a sling after discovering that she suffered a fractured wrist in the incident.

She has now revealed that this may scupper her chances of going on a family holiday with her two children.

Currently, all three are still set to go to Malaga later on in the month, but a meeting with the doctor may rule out any chance of going – potentially costing her hundreds of pounds.

She added: “This holiday has been months in the making for us and for it to be cancelled like this has made me so angry.

“Obviously I understand that people need mobility scooters to get about their daily lives, but this incident has left me struggling to things that I do on a daily basis.

“I need help washing my hair, I struggle to cook and get dressed.

“I’m just hoping that we can all get away for a much needed break.”
