Irish trialist Karl Byrne scored a sensational winner as Boston United began their pre-season campaign by claiming the scalp of Grimsby Town.

The right-back’s stunning strike from 30 yards sealed an impressive 2-1 win over the League Two club.

While the match was United’s first of the summer, it was the Mariners’ third following comfortable wins over Cleethorpes Town and Grantham Town.

But there was to be no third win in a row for Michael Jolley’s side against a Boston team containing new signings and trialists.

After a goal-less first half, one of the Pilgrims’ new signings, Jordan Thewlis, made it 1-0 from the penalty spot on 49 minutes.

Former Lincoln City striker Matt Green levelled for the Mariners on 64 minutes, but Byrne restored his side’s lead with his wonderful effort four minutes from time.

The Pilgrims play their second pre-season game on Monday when they visit Worksop Town.

That is followed by the County Cup tie against Paul Hurst’s Scunthorpe United on Wednesday (7.30pm kick-off).
