Sports: Jordan Adebayo-Smith relishing first team experience

More exciting sports news from around Lincolnshire…

Jordan Adebayo-Smith revealed he is enjoying the step up to the first team after scoring City’s consolation goal in the defeat to Sheffield Wednesday.

The 18 year old came off the bench with 20 minutes to go to convert his fourth goal of the summer, adding to the hat-trick he bagged against Gainsborough Trinity the previous Saturday.

For Adebayo-Smith any amount of game time can be a learning curve in the senior game.

“I feel like it was a good experience to get on the pitch especially against a Championship squad,” he said.

“Obviously I am still young and have a lot to learn, but even by being on the bench and coming on against a team like Sheffield Wednesday can provide me with further experience.

“However long I get on the pitch playing against these players will always show me the things I need to work on.”

So far this pre-season the youngster has taken the step up to City’s seniors in his stride and it’s perhaps easy to forget that just a few months ago he was featuring for Grantham Town in the Northern Premier League – step seven of English football.

The youngster appeared unfazed, however, when coming up against such seasoned professionals as Liam Palmer, Barry Bannan and Jordan Rhodes.

“It’s a very big difference, but one I am enjoying,” he explained.

“I have always aspired to play against the best players and do that at the highest level possible I can.

“If I keep doing what I am doing, and keep improving, then hopefully there will be more of this to come.”

Adebayo-Smith is now looking forward to flying out to Spain with the rest of the Imps squad, and with only John Akinde and Matt Rhead currently providing competition for a place in attack, he is likely to get more game time against quality opposition.

“It’ll be my first holiday this year,” joked Adebayo-Smith, who was born in California.

“It’s another Championship squad and yes it will be hard especially with the heat, but it’s just a case of remaining focused and working hard.”
