Sports: Lincoln City Women up against ‘title favourites’ Wolves in season opener

More exciting sports news from around Lincolnshire…

Lincoln City Women manager Richard Cooper is targeting a top-three finish for his side this season.

After Nettleham Ladies joined forces with the Imps earlier this summer, the club in its new guise kick off their National League Division One Midlands campaign on Sunday when they travel to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Lincoln City name has helped Cooper strengthen his squad over the summer and he is delighted with how pre-season has gone.

“We’ve brought in six key players who have really strengthened the squad,” said Cooper.

“We’ve got much more strength in depth compared to last season.

“We’ve also got a development squad now which adds to the competition for places and overall quality.”

With just one promotion place up for grabs, the battle for the title promises to be intense.

“If we finish in the top three, we’ll have had a fantastic season,” added Cooper, who led Nettleham to a mid-table finish in the division last season.

“That would be a major step forward from where we were.

“If we do, that will give us an idea of what we need to do to push on for a title challenge in the future.

“A lot of people are saying we’ve got a great chance of promotion, but I’ve got to say ‘hang on a minute, let’s not get carried away’.

“That’s what we’re fighting for, to get promotion, but with the likes of Wolves in there, it’s going to be tough.

“They’ve got to be the favourites to win it, which makes the first game of the season even more important.

“It might be a good time to play them.”

The team’s first home match is against Bedworth United at Ashby Avenue on Sunday, September 1.
