Sports: Peter Hickman goes into road racing folklore with magnificent seven at Ulster Grand Prix

More exciting sports news from around Lincolnshire…

Peter Hickman is fast on the way to becoming a legend of road racing after seven straight wins – including five in a day – at the Ulster Grand Prix.

In what has been described as one of the greatest feats in road racing history, the Lincolnshire rider won every race he entered at Northern Ireland’s biggest outdoor sporting event.

Hickman won two races on Thursday and he completed a clean sweep of races he contested with five on Saturday.

The 32-year-old was only threatened in the final Supersport race by Lee Johnston, but eventually won after a thrilling duel.

Hickman, who also set the fastest ever road race lap of 136.415mph on Thursday night, paid tribute his Smiths Racing team after the event.

“Although I try to win every race, to have actually achieved that and end the week with seven wins from seven starts is something I never really thought I’d do,” he said.

“I’m over the moon and we’ve created history, which is testament to the whole Smiths Racing team and the awesome bikes they have built for me.

“I just tried to get to the front as soon as I could and once I did I was able to ride my own race and pick my own lines. It’s absolutely mega and what a week it’s been.”

Hickman – a five-time winner at the Isle of Man TT – is now the joint fourth most successful rider in the history of the Ulster Grand Prix with 13 wins.

His busy schedule continues when he switches attention back to the British Superbike Championship with his home round at Cadwell Park this weekend.
