Lincoln City midfielder Joe Morrell earned praise from Ryan Giggs following his impressive international debut for Wales.
The 22-year-old, who has impressed for the Imps since arriving on a season-long loan deal from Bristol City, played the entire 90 minutes during the friendly against Belarus in Cardiff on Monday.
Morrell, who completed 59 of his 66 passes, also started the moved which led to Manchester United’s Dan James scoring the only goal of the game.
Morrell has been on Giggs’ radar for some time, but his lack of games for Bristol has delayed his senior bow for his country.
Speaking after the victory, Giggs said: “Rob Page [Wales coach and former Sheffield United defender] has told me about Morrell for a while. He’s just not had that regular football. This season he’s played more or less every game.
“I thought it was a brilliant performance, he did exactly what I asked of him.”
Morrell was pleased with the way his debut went.
“The manager was happy I think that I stuck to the gameplan and what he wanted from me,” he said.
“He was happy I approached it like any other game. I felt that was the best way to do it because it meant I wouldn’t get too nervous in the approach leading to the game.”
Morrell also praised the Imps after making his international bow.
“Going to Lincoln is the reason I’m here,” said Morrell.
“If I was at Bristol City and not playing like last year I wouldn’t be in this position. The gaffer [Giggs] is big on players that are playing regular football and I’ve loved every minute at Lincoln.
“To get to that stage last night I just had to enjoy it, it was more about the process of getting there and that has been tough.
“Of course, it was a proud moment for my friends and family, especially my mum’s side because they are Welsh.”
